Westcott Remix 2022 Update
We believe neighborhoods that don’t evolve stagnate. Building with traditional tools and a progressive vision for the neighborhood can benefit a community in many ways. We aim for Westcott Remix to be a catalyst for positive, locally-driven growth.
Integrating Art and Architecture
Westcott Remix is designed to incorporate painting and relief sculpture into two locations on the building facade. With the integration of these artistic elements we hope to create meaningful architecture that inspires a strong sense of place.
Refining Facade Designs
We’ve developed three building design concepts to take to the next level of detail and exploration. These are varied expressions of what the Remix can be, one more extroverted, another introverted, and a third that’s a combination. In this post, we’ll share how those designs emerged and our thoughts on what they offer.
Facade Variations
The feedback was clear, and so we’ve developed design options for multi-faceted facades. A couple of months ago, we shared four massing schemes exploring possibilities for the building’s size and style…
Interior Flow & Spaces
How do a building’s circulation elements determine the character of the spaces within? Every building is defined by a unique navigational structure. The ways in which a building dictates the movement of people fundamentally informs one’s use and experience of the space.
An Outdoor Space: What Works?
Where is your favorite outdoor patio, and what makes it great? The Westcott Remix will include an outdoor space on the sidewalk level. This space is planned to measure approximately 30’ by 30’ and would sit at the south-east corner of the building, right along the sidewalk. We need to determine the best way to use it, considering both its relationship to the sidewalk and to one of the building’s commercial spaces.
Exploring Size and Style
There are thousands of ways to compose a structure on a site. Our challenge is to design a 3-story, mixed use building that both responds to the character of the existing commercial strip and feels fresh and contemporary. We created four massing schemes exploring...
The Study Phase: 2018–2019
What happened in the study phase of this project and what was learned? As some of you may know about and possibly participated in, we carried out an exploratory phase of this project to study its viability in 2018-19. During that initial six-month phase, we...
Westcott Remix Overview & Goals
We have a shared vision for our city’s future: Neighborhoods that continue to build on their historic character, and increase quality of life by prioritizing urban design, sustainability, and the local economy. The Westcott Business District is the...
Who We Are
Who are we and how did we become developers on this project? We all grew up on Syracuse’s east side, graduating from Nottingham High School in ‘93, ‘94 and ‘95. In our youth, we went to Westcott’s variety and hardware stores with our parents; and later to the Westcott Cinema and Seven Rays (the new-age bookshop). As teenagers we hung out at Fastbreak Pizza (now Dorian’s, the site of this project), eating broccoli slices after practice or in the evenings, likely up to no good.
Site Analysis
What is the environmental context of this project’s site and how might it affect the design? In this post we look at the site through four different lenses. The diagrams below describe the site through: sun and shade, non-residential activity, pedestrian traffic and street traffic. These factors may or may not impact the building design, but they provide useful background for decisions making and analysis.
